2018 Commencement Keynote Speakers

麻豆社 is pleased to announce the accomplished actor John Lithgow and his spouse, the eminent economic historian Mary Yeager, will jointly deliver the keynote address at the University鈥檚 2018 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m.

Mr. Lithgow will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree. Dr. Yeager will receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree. Together they have one of the very rare marriages spanning Hollywood and the academy; rarer still, it has lasted 36 years with no end in sight.

In announcing the selection, Dominican President Mary Marcy stated: 鈥淛ohn Lithgow鈥檚 acting career has been marked by wit, insight, and humanity; Mary Yeager鈥檚 scholarship combines a fierce intellect and a strong sense of justice. Both have reached the height of their professions, and together they represent the opportunity of education. We are pleased to honor them, and to invite them to speak to our graduates.鈥

John Lithgow has been appearing on the big screen, small screen, and stage for more than 40 years, winning multiple Tonys, Emmys, Golden Globes and Oscar nominations. Concurrently, he has written books, recorded albums, and performed concerts for children.

Mr. Lithgow鈥檚 recent activities bear out his versatility: the one-man show Stories By Heart on Broadway, Daddy's Home 2 in movie theaters, the sitcom Trial & Error on NBC, The Crown on Netflix, and a kids' concert at Carnegie Hall, all within the last two years.
Mr. Lithgow graduated from Harvard College in 1967 with an A.B. magna cum laude in history and literature. He won a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Dr. Yeager is a professor of Economic and Business History in the Department of History at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). A native of Montana, she earned a BA from Middlebury College, a PhD from Johns Hopkins, and was one of the first female professors in Brown University鈥檚 Department of History.

In a distinguished career, Dr. Yeager has written on subjects as varied as American meatpacking and the Latin American steel industry, with particular attention in recent years to the evolving history of women in business. Her articles have appeared in numerous journals, including Enterprise & Society, the Encyclopedia of American Economic HistoryWomen in BusinessBusiness History Review, and the Journal of Economic History.

Dr. Yeager recently served as President of the American Business History Association, producing a Miami conference titled "Inequalities: Winners and Losers in Business.鈥

Delivering Dominican鈥檚 commencement address is not the first time Dr. Yeager has collaborated with her actor husband: at another recent conference in Berlin, the two of them delivered the address Money in Thy Purse: The Drama of Business.
